Pilules immortelles

In the Taoist religion, a fundamental belief held that man survives after death. A new body—beautiful, youthful, and immortal—would emerge from the believer's body, much like a cicada emerging from its chrysalis. For this metamorphosis to be complete, one had to consume an immortality pill. Its preparation was a meticulous process: in a laboratory protected by talismans and featuring an east-facing door, about ten ingredients (such as goat hair, mercury, and cinnabar) had to be cooked for five days. Once cooled, the foam from the mixture was collected using a rooster feather. Each tiny bubble constituted an immortality pill.
